How do you know who to trust when selecting a skilled nursing care facility (SNF)?
This is a question people often ask when selecting a long-term care facility for a loved one. It is one that Medicare also asks. So Medicare created an accreditation and review site to help people “compare nursing homes more easily and to help identify areas about which you may want to ask questions” (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid).
5 Star Accreditation in Skilled Nursing Care
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service give a general rating to the nursing facility, and also rate health inspections, staffing, and Quality Measures. The Medicare criteria for facilities are based on both state and federal data. For example, a skilled nursing facility that achieves 4 Stars on health inspections has had less citations than average on their state health inspections.
Would this rating be useful in your search for skilled nursing care?
Each quality rating has 5 stars possible, 3 is average, and 5 is the highest rating an SNF can receive. Any skilled nursing care facility’s accreditation is accessible via Medicare’s Nursing Home Compare. This site provides data regarding health, staff, general information, and more. You can compare any skilled care provider in any location, looking by name or by the distance from your home for ease of access.
The quality ratings give you the opportunity to read more in-depth data, including dates of health inspections, percentage of recovery for short term care, and more.
We hope this will be a great resource for your search for quality care!
